Conscious Discipline

Inner Serenity and Paceful Learning

Conscious Discipline® is a method of organising our school around the concept of a School Family. Each member of the family, including both adults and children, learns the skills necessary to successfully manage life tasks such as learning, forming relationships, communicating effectively, being sensitive to others’ needs, and getting along with others. We empower our teachers and parents with the Seven Powers for Self-Control, which change our perception and relationship with conflict, enabling us to be proactive instead of reactive during times of conflict. These core beliefs strengthen our use of the frontal lobes of the brain, which are to the brain as a conductor is to an orchestra.

From the beliefs instilled with the Powers for Self-Control, the Basic Skills of Discipline emerge. These skills change how we as adults respond to conflict in a way that facilitates the development of the frontal lobes in children. These skills are also what adults need to constructively transform conflict into teaching and learning opportunities. As we begin to change our attitudes and behaviours, so will our children. We cannot teach behaviours and skills that we do not possess ourselves.

As adults begin to change our attitudes and behaviors, so will the children in our care.

We cannot teach behaviors and skills that we do not possess ourselves.
